The perfect puzzle. The leaders are free to concentrate on their individual statements as well as on perfectly complementing each other. The rhythm group carries them to where they want to move in jazz heaven with verve and spirit. And yes, I enjoy following them.

We’ve got a brand new Joe Lovano piece entitled “Newark Flash.” Inspired by Wayne Shorter, it was Wayne’s childhood nickname. “That-A- Way Piscataway” is a new Dave Douglas composition inspired by inspired by the Wayne Shorter composition from 1959, "Callaway Went That-A-Way." The third bonus track, “Mission Creep,” is a further exploration of the Douglas composition that appears on the original album.

Thank You to Wayne Shorter for leading us fearlessly through so many scandalous and tempestuous times.
Co-leading the quintet Sound Prints is one of the most joyous, creative experiences in our musical explorations today. The music on this recording ‘Scandal,’ our second release as a band and our first studio session, just poured out of us as one. We dare to improvise and create music within the music in the moment, as a unit. In this age of scandal, we rejoice in the freedom to seek the truth in collective inquiry — beyond the page and beyond standard forms. On each listening you will feel and discover more and more of the beauty and magic we encounter as we play and create each piece. Enjoy!

Press Quotes:
“Lovano’s cobalt-blue tone on tenor saxophone paired with Douglas’ crimson-tinged trumpet flares create startling timbres when they play in unison or intertwine improvisational lines.”
Down Beat ★★★★
“[Lovano and Douglas] combine brilliantly to adjusting texture and tone as the composition demands and swooping from smooth modernism to expressionist shout with ease … The band delivers a strong sense of the collective.”
Financial Times ★★★★★
“This is jazz with a deep sense of history, but imaginatively and spontaneously reworked … this session catches them at their most collectively fluent.”
The Guardian ★★★★☆
“That loose, open-ended postbop sound is there, but apart from two classics, all the compositions are new. And what tunes they are — richly rewarding melodies that could have been minted for the Miles Davis quintet. Much of that band’s rigour and responsiveness is present here too.”
The Times UK ★★★★☆
“Free, open-ended investigations sit side by side with the more straight-ahead … exciting, often thrilling jazz.”
Jazz Times
“This enjoyable set co-led by trumpeter Dave Douglas and saxophonist Joe Lovano hangs at the edges of a straight-ahead path, dishing out music that sounds both a little bit different and distinctly familiar.”
Bandcamp Daily
“Lovano's … tenor broad and woolly as it sprawls across the grooves, while Douglas is the perfect foil with his slicing incisiveness of sound and ideas. The material, in addition to originals by the leaders, includes two of Wayne Shorter's incomparable pieces, and it is gratifying to see Shorter's work being revered in a way that Monk's and Mingus's was before him.”
Sydney Morning Herald ★★★½☆
Sound Prints is an innovative quintet co-led by saxophonist Joe Lovano and trumpeter Dave Douglas featuring pianist Lawrence
Fields, bassist Linda May Han Oh and drummer Joey Baron. While the group takes their inspiration from the music of iconic saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter, the quintet’s focus is on new original compositions by Lovano and Douglas....more
So much fun and joy and swing, and the instrumentation allows for some super-fresh sounds as well as some old-timey goodness. And simply great tunes too! Giles
Ward's swirling, breezy sax feels very close and intimate - listening to it I pictured myself in a small basement room as the band played - but the 10 tongues paint a joyful and sophisticated urban fairytale that changes scene cinematically and builds to a satisfying finale. Tom Colquhoun
This quintet has acquired legendary status as a working unit...all the musicians are exemplary at their craft and DD is one of my 'Big5'...he is an exquisite composer of both depth and breadth of vision...you can instantly recognise Dave's DNA in a tune...what's more, you feel there is also so much more to come!;his powers of expression are so special.
These compositions are from the heart and I can only suggest that you take them to yours...

Chicago sax luminary Greg Ward develops the dual-guitar frontline of his backing Rogue Parade quintet as an avatar for singular strength on this zesty collection of jazz-rock fusion songs. Bandcamp Album of the Day Jan 10, 2019
This is a beautiful, lyrical session. The interplay between Dave Douglas's trumpet and Frank Woeste's keyboards creates some surprisingly lush textures and the rhythm section of Matt Brewer and Clarence Penn lift it to another level. A real find. chorna
